Chiang Mai and the North offers some of the best climbing in Thailand. The higher altitude that the south results in cooler temperatures and a more comfortable environment for climbers, particularly in the winter months.

The most popular climbing location close to the city is the Crazy Horse Buttress, which has over 200 routes catering to every level of climbing proficiency. The site has been the source of some controversy in recent years and rows over ownership, maintenance and access have rumbled on causing a curtailment in activity and considerable frustration among the climbing community. There are other options in the region, notably in Chiang Dao and Lampang.

The city itself has several indoor climbing gyms, all of which are contact points for the friendly and welcoming Chiang Mai climbing community.
