Art auction for elephants

Artists donate works to fundraise for Chiang Mai’s elephants

Each and every day a two to four tonne elephant requires 10% of its bodyweight in sustenance – that’s 200-300kg of food per day per elephant.

Without tourism baht to pay for all this food, Thailand’s many captive elephants are struggling alongside their mahouts and camp owners.

The Chiang Mai Tourism Association has stepped in to try to help alleviate this burden for many elephant camps and mahouts by organising the ‘Elephants survive because we help’ campaign to raise funds to support Chiang Mai’s elephants.

The official opening ceremony for the campaign was on the 9th January 2021 at the Chiang Mai Arts Museum Mae On and was presided over by one of the deputy governors.

The ‘Art for Elephant’ painting competition is being organised to auction works from elephants as well as artists to raise funds to support the elephants.

There  will be three highlighted paintings of elephants donated by top artists Pornchai Jaima, Prasong Luemuang and Pichai Nirand, all of whom are very famous artists whose paintings come with high price tags.

The auction will be held on the 15th January on the Facebook page of Chiang Mai Art Museum: https://www.facebook.com/ChiangMaiArtMuseum/
